Ren walks a fine line helping out the ruling class of nightwalkers (Talmadge Family) but keeping his free will. Luckily, Ren has help from his familiar ( a ghost raven) and his best friend a freed gargoyle. There is also a side plot with the local supernatural branch of the police force, whom Ren helps solve crimes, but I like the paranormal world the best. Great story. Too short. Typos are always an unprofessional distraction. Her stories are very entertaining, but need good editing. I still will recommend her books.
At the end of the book we are given this info "A J Brahms is the pen name for a duo known separately for several series in Urban Fantasy." But nowhere was I able to identify who they were, which is a shame, because if I am not already reading their work, I certainly would on the basis of this book. It certainly accounts for the professional level of the writing, editing & proofing.
The protagonist is engaging & has enough secrets, both revealed & kept, to keep me interested. The pace & level of suspense kept me reading & there were a couple of instances where I realized I was holding my breath. Some of the secondary characters are unusual & unusually rendered & there is room for more development.
It is first person narration, which is my favorite. But I almost didn't get past the "Look inside" opening sample which gave a somewhat misleading impression of the narrator as one of those boringly cocky & snide that so much of Urban Fantasy seems to run toward. Keep going & you'll be rewarded. I would happily have read another hundred pages, but the book was still satisfying & I'm already impatient for the next installment.
I read this genra every day and this was such a good story I had trouble putting it down. A great combination of characters and some changes and surprises
I have been an avid follower of Phaedra Weldon' s books and this book is one of her best. I found it difficult to put down.
I loved this book! It felt lot like early Jim Butcher, moving right along with the action and not a lot of unnecessary dialogue. Hope the following stories are as good.
I bought this book so I could check out an author I did not know. I could not put it down. Every twist was not what I was expecting. I rarely purchase the second book in a series but I wanted to know what came next. I cannot wait to read the latest instalment.
Enjoyed this change of pace in the paranormal world of characters. Story was interesting and had good character development. Look forward to reading more of this series.
